1860s to 70s – The ship Rosalia carried Chinese on its 4 month trip from Macau to Peru, 100,000 Chinese were taken to Peru where they worked on sugar plantations as coolies. 1984-85 – Cuba provided advanced weapons and demolition training to the Tupac Amaru revolutionary movement MRTA in Peru. The Tupac Amaru attacked the US embassy in 1984, bombed the Texaco offices in 1985 and attacked the residence of the US ambassador in 1985 in Lima.

1985-90 – BCCI forged relations with some of the rich people in the region, Alan Garcia Perez, president of Peru from 1988-90. Arms sales with France 1982 In 1986 Pere agreed to place central bank funds in BCCI.

1991-92 - $3 million payoffs BCCI paid to two officials of Peru’s central bank in exchange BCCI received central bank deposits. Peru’s former president Alan Garcia Perez knew about he bribes. The Peru president investigated Garcia corruption and deposited millions in BCCI. Garcia as charged with embezelment. Peru’s supreme court said he was immune from prosecution. In April 1992 Garcia fled to Colombia and political asylum.

17 Dec 1996 – Tupac Amaru seized diplomats, 23 members of the Tupac Amaru revolutionary movement MRTA took several hundred people hostage at a party given by the Japanese ambassador at his residence in Lima. Among the hostages were several US officials, foreign ambassadors and other diplomats, Peru government officials and Japanese businessmen. The group demanded the release of MRTS members in prison and safe passage for the hostage takers, The terrorists released most of the hostages in Dec but held 81 Peru and Japan citizens for several months.

20 March 2002 – A car bomb exploded at a shopping centre near the US embassy in Lima, nine people were killed and 32 wounded. The dead included two police and a teenager. Peru government suspected the shining path or the Tupac Amaru. The attack happened three days before President George W Bush visited Peru.
